Music Time: The Mars Volta
The Mars Volta is a band that seems to be quite popular recently. They just released a cd. Which is mostly harmless, except that it sounds horrible.
If you want to listen to it, you can here. Viscera eyes is the song that's been played on satelite radio a lot, so I'll talk about that one.
First they lay down a nice guitar lick. Then they play a guitar solo over it, and it just doesn't fit. Then the singing starts, which is really incomprehensible high pitched singing. I'm pretty sure it's latin, but it just doesn't fit. The whole song keeps going on just like this until the end which sounds like the song is being played on a crappy radio for a couple of seconds to remind you they are a "prog" band. Then it goes back to the same old licks. The worst part may be the ending, which sounds like the begining of a guitar solo being cut of very early.
It really just sounds like some people through some loops together in Acid Music Studio, and got someone to sing high pitch gibberish over it.
I just don't see how people like the mars volta.
It probably helps that he looks strangely like the very funny Tobias Funke from Arrested development with a beard and fro.

I disagree, its called thinking, and sometimes music requires you to do such a thing. the mars volta requires you to listen deeply and open your mind. But I guess if are not in to that sort of thing, britney will always be there for you.

do you know any music theory? do you know how complex the compositions of the mars volta is? The Mars Volta is the greatest band of our time and they are completely contrary to our American Idol obsessed, over produced corporate bullshit music.

Who ever thinks about considering for a moment that The Mars Volta is just another untalented progressive rock band really needs to learn something about music theory. Unfortunately I won't be bashing you for not liking the Mars Volta today. Because if I got mad at you for that then I'd technically have to like everyone. Certain people with certain tastes enjoy it. I had Viscera eyes playing in the background while I read your article. Ironically everything you mentioned that you didn't like about the song I get excited off of. So yeah just different tastes. But yeah I love it =)

While I do agree he looks like David Cross (Actor who plays Tobias) The Mars Volta does have a very eclectic sound to it which may not be appreciated by people who tend to enjoy the sounds of Flo-rida and Fergie. When you realize that not all great music is generated through simplicity and the ability to capture every sound on the first listen through you may fully appreciate the Mars Volta. Until then however, try not to disregard a band of whom you have heard ONE song (Viscera Eyes). That's all I have to say.

"it just doesn't fit" says it all. Try thinking outside the box and you might start to appriciate life more. The Mars Volta along with many other forward thinking musicians, are creating the most important music of our time.
The mars volta should be listened as an album. not as a single track. The album initially had only about five tracks and it had to be cut into several pieces to be published by the label. You cannot judge poorly on things you cannot understand. You need to do a little of research from TMV on its early days as at the drive-in and see how far they have gone. By the way, you talk too much about the lyrics and the music and not the story behind it, the whole dwelling process.

I am going to back everyone else who commented you and tell you that you are wrong. Yes, I completely understand that every individual has his or her own individual taste, for that it was makes the world an interesting place. But, I don't feel it is your place to put down a band that truly does know a great amount about musical composition. Also, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez deserves quite a bit more credit than you are lending him. He not only is an amazing guitarist, but he is also the heart of The Mars Volta. Not to mention the fact that his goal is to put out 8 solo albums in 2008 and he has already completed two. He alone writes and composes every part of each song, then Cedric presents his lyrics. Also, Cedric's singing is more so an amazing range of talent than just "high pitched." But anyway, have fun listening to shit music!
When someone knows nothing about music... music is something that that person shouldn't be talking about.. that person is you! If you can't get your head out of the bucket of shit-music you've been listening to your whole life enough to wrap your semiconscious mind around the complexity of the music that great artists make...
